The mountain was named by local hay farmer who thought the Pimas were very superstitious about the mountains that lie to the east of the Salt River Valley. Hence the name Superstition Mountain. Prior to 1872 the mountain were known as the Salt River Mountains and some military maps made reference to mountains as the "Sierra de Supersticiones during the 1864-68 mountain campaign against the Apache and Yavapai. The purpose of the military campaign was to rid the mountains of the Apaches.
