I am thrilled to share that the second painting in my Appalachian Range Series is officially complete! 🌅
Following Cataloochee Valley Elk, this new work (Magical May Sunset, inspired by a stunning reference photograph by Thomas Mabry) moves away from the valley floor and explodes right into the pure, high-chroma spirit of the mountain atmosphere.
For my fellow painters and collectors, I’ve put together a comprehensive studio journal on my Substack, Practicing Art. I break down my exact three-session choreography—from managing the terrifying blank canvas gap in session one, to technical scumbling techniques for mountain fog, to why I always use a monochrome filter to verify my directional light touchpoints before signing off.
If you’ve ever struggled to blend brilliant sunset oranges into high blue skies without creating a muddy middle ground, this essay digs deep into how to build that transition field successfully.

I am thrilled to share the completed final version of "Emergence," the latest 24" x 24" gouache painting in my Divine Multiples: Internal Life series.
This painting taught me that self-actualization is not a quiet mending, but a radiant emission. During the studio sessions, the piece demanded a radical shift—I rotated the canvas 90 degrees, turning a vertical incubator into an expansive, horizontal cosmic eye.
From the dimensional, spherical "white hole" at the core, a cool fluid spirit-form cascades downward and hooks sharply against a blazing, textured background of reds, oranges, and lime-gold. The cool celestial spirit and the warm terrestrial flesh sit in electric opposition.
To preserve the tactile nature of the work, the warm reds wrap completely around the sides of the gallery canvas, allowing it to hang unframed as a physical object in space. The piece is finished with a protective layer of UV spray and a traditional coat of Dorland's Wax for a gorgeous matte finish.
You can read my full essay exploring the color theory, composition, and spiritual philosophy behind this piece over on my Substack publication, Practicing Art.
