Another video in our series bringing a psychoanalytic and psychological perspective to the theme of the Sabbath School lesson of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

This week was Lesson 11 — Living with Christ, and I really needed to talk to you heart to heart.

Paul begins with an invitation that sounds simple, but is actually very profound: “Set your mind on things above.”

When I read that through the lens of psychoanalysis, I see a call to something very real and very concrete.
Ferenczi taught us that the human mind tends to live trapped in old emotional patterns, repeating responses we learned long ago — often before we even realized we were learning them.

We react automatically.
With anger.
With defense.
With control.
Without even noticing.

But Paul says in Colossians 3 that this old nature does not have to keep ruling us.

He uses a beautiful image: taking off dirty clothes.
Like someone who comes home exhausted at the end of the day and simply removes what was heavy and burdensome.

And then, intentionally and by grace, puts on something new:

Compassion.
Kindness.
Humility.
Gentleness.
Patience.

And when Jaak Panksepp studied the emotional systems of the brain, he discovered that affection, care, and connection are not just beautiful feelings.
They are real neurobiological systems that transform us from the inside out.

In chaplaincy I see this all the time.

People want to change their lives, but they try to change only their behavior without renewing the heart.

And the renewal of the heart begins with awareness.

Mark Solms shows us that much of what drives us comes from processes that have not yet reached consciousness.

That is why the Word, the music, the songs Paul mentions are not just liturgical details.

They are ways of feeding the inner life so that what comes out of us becomes different.

Oskar Pfister, who beautifully and ethically united psychoanalysis with faith, believed that authentic spiritual life and emotional health walk together.

And I believe that with all my clinical experience.

When Christ governs the interior life, you may still be in the same house, the same job, with the same people.

But your mindset changes.

And that changes everything around you.
