Features like big eyes, rounded faces, and soft proportions mimic human infants, triggering an instinct to nurture and protect. This is known as baby schema—and it’s why certain animals instantly win our affection.
But when an animal’s features feel unfamiliar, asymmetrical, or even faintly associated with disease cues, our brains often flip the switch the other way—labeling them as “unattractive” or “creepy.”
It’s not really about the animal at all. It’s about us.
Beauty, in the natural world, may be far more about perception than reality—and far more ancient than we think.
