Technology Governance: Who Owns Technology Decisions?

One of the biggest mistakes organizations make is assuming technology decisions belong exclusively to IT.

They don't.

Technology decisions are business decisions.

Every major investment should answer questions like:

✔ Does this support our strategic objectives?

✔ What business problem are we solving?

✔ What risks are we accepting?

✔ How will success be measured?

✔ What is our expected return on investment?

Without technology governance, organizations often experience:

• Duplicate systems

• Conflicting priorities

• Budget overruns

• Increased cybersecurity risk

• Projects that fail to deliver business value

Strong governance ensures technology investments align with organizational priorities, not individual preferences.

Question for business leaders:

Does your organization have a formal process for evaluating technology investments before funding them?

Technology Question of the Week

If your company's technology went down for one full business day, would you know exactly what it would cost your organization?

Many business leaders immediately think about lost revenue.

But the real cost often includes:

✔ Lost employee productivity

✔ Missed customer opportunities

✔ Delayed projects

✔ Reputational damage

✔ Compliance risks

✔ Overtime and recovery costs

As a CIO, one of the most important questions isn't "How do we prevent every outage?"

It's "Do we understand the business impact when technology fails?"

The organizations that recover the fastest are the ones that have already answered that question and built a strategy around it.

Now it's your turn.

How long could your organization operate without its critical technology systems before it significantly impacted your business?

Share your thoughts in the comments.

For years, I've watched organizations invest heavily in technology with the expectation that it would make their business more efficient, more secure, and better prepared for growth.

Too often, the opposite happens.

Technology becomes more expensive to manage. Systems become disconnected. Cybersecurity risks increase. Vendors multiply. Leadership loses visibility into where IT dollars are going and whether those investments are delivering value.

The problem usually isn't the technology itself.

It's the absence of a clear strategy.

That's one of the reasons I founded SevenCore IT Strategy Group.

After more than 25 years leading enterprise technology initiatives in complex environments, I wanted to help small and mid-sized organizations gain access to the same level of executive technology leadership without the cost of hiring a full-time CIO.

At SevenCore, we help organizations:

✔ Identify technology waste and unnecessary costs

✔ Reduce cybersecurity and operational risk

✔ Evaluate infrastructure and communications environments

✔ Optimize IT budgets and vendor relationships

✔ Develop practical technology roadmaps aligned with business goals

Technology should be a competitive advantage, not a constant source of frustration.

If your organization feels like it's reacting to technology instead of strategically managing it, I'd be glad to connect and discuss how executive IT leadership can help.

A Conversation I Have More Often Than You'd Think

I was talking with a business owner recently who told me,

"Our IT works...I think."

That answer stuck with me.

Technology shouldn't be something you hope is working.

As a business grows, it's easy to outgrow the systems that supported it a few years ago.

Maybe cybersecurity hasn't kept up.

Maybe you're paying for software no one uses.

Maybe your vendors have never been reviewed.

None of these issues usually show up overnight.

They build slowly until they become expensive.

One of the biggest values an outside advisor brings is a fresh set of eyes.

Sometimes all it takes is someone asking a few questions that no one inside the organization has had time to ask.

Good technology should support growth, not slow it down.

What questions are you asking about your IT environment this year?

Technology Isn't Always the Problem

I've noticed something after spending more than 25 years working in enterprise IT.

Most companies don't actually have a technology problem.

They have an information problem.

Leadership knows something doesn't feel right.

IT costs keep increasing.

Projects take longer than expected.

Employees complain about systems.

Vendors always seem to have another product to sell.

But no one has stepped back to look at the whole environment.

Over time, technology grows organically. New software gets added. New vendors come in. Old systems stay because "they still work."

Eventually it becomes difficult to answer simple questions like:

• What are we paying for?

• Are we getting value from it?

• What should we replace first?

That's why I started SevenCore.

Not to sell more technology but to help businesses understand the technology they already have and make smarter decisions moving forward.

Sometimes the biggest improvement isn't buying something new.

It's finally getting clarity.

Why Good Companies Struggle with IT

Many companies don't have a technology problem.

They have a visibility problem.

By the time leadership notices an issue, they're already experiencing:

• Rising costs

• Security concerns

• System instability

• Vendor frustration

• Delayed projects

Most of these challenges develop slowly over time.

New systems get added.

New vendors are introduced.

Cloud services expand.

Business needs change.

Eventually the environment becomes fragmented.

Without a strategic review, technology evolves into a collection of disconnected solutions instead of a business-enabling platform.

The most successful organizations periodically step back and ask:

"Does our technology environment still support where the business is going?"

That question often reveals opportunities to reduce risk, simplify operations, and improve performance.

Technology strategy isn't about buying more technology.

It's about creating alignment between technology investments and business objectives.

5 Signs Your Company Is Overspending on IT

Many organizations assume rising IT costs are simply the price of doing business. In reality, unnecessary technology spending often hides in plain sight.

Here are 5 signs your company may be overspending on IT:

🔹 1. Multiple Tools Doing the Same Job
If your teams use several platforms for communication, file sharing, project management, or reporting, you're likely paying for duplicate functionality.

🔹 2. Unused Software Licenses
Employees leave, roles change, and subscriptions continue. Many companies pay for licenses that haven't been used in months.

🔹 3. Technology Costs Keep Rising Without Better Results
If your IT budget increases every year but productivity, security, and operational efficiency remain unchanged, it's time to investigate where those dollars are going.

🔹 4. Vendor Contracts Haven't Been Reviewed Recently
Long-term contracts often contain outdated services, unnecessary features, or pricing that no longer reflects current market rates.

🔹 5. Legacy Systems Are Consuming Time and Resources
Older technology frequently requires more maintenance, creates security risks, and increases operational costs while delivering less value.

The goal isn't to spend less on technology.

The goal is to spend smarter.

At SevenCore IT Strategy Group, we help organizations identify hidden technology waste, optimize investments, reduce operational complexity, and align IT spending with business objectives.

Question for business leaders:
When was the last time you reviewed your technology investments to determine whether they were still delivering value?

Many growing businesses don't realize how much money, productivity, and opportunity are lost because of technology that has evolved without a clear strategy.

Over time, systems become disconnected.

• Multiple vendors doing similar work
• Unused software licenses
• Aging infrastructure
• Communication platforms that don't integrate
• Security gaps that go unnoticed

The result?

Increased costs, frustrated employees, and technology that becomes a roadblock instead of a business advantage.

At SevenCore IT Strategy Group, we help organizations identify technology blind spots, reduce unnecessary expenses, strengthen security, and build practical roadmaps for future growth.

Technology should support your business strategy—not compete with it.

If you've ever wondered whether your IT environment is helping or hurting your organization, it may be time for an assessment.

To help businesses gain control of their technology, reduce unnecessary costs, strengthen security, and build strategic roadmaps that support growth.

That's where SevenCore comes in.

We help organizations identify risks, uncover hidden technology costs, simplify infrastructure, optimize communications environments, and develop practical plans for modernization.

Our approach is built around the S.E.V.E.N. Framework:
