CPR vs. BLS — What’s the Difference?

I’m often asked whether CPR and BLS are the same.

They’re related — but not identical.

CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation)

Designed for the general public, workplaces, childcare providers, coaches, and community members.

Focuses on:
• Chest compressions
• Rescue breaths
• AED use
• Basic emergency response

BLS (Basic Life Support)

Designed for healthcare professionals.
Includes:
• High-quality CPR standards
• Two-rescuer coordination
• Bag-mask ventilation
• Team-based response
• Stricter skills testing

Both certifications are valid for two years.
Both require hands-on skills verification.

If you work in healthcare, BLS is typically required.
If you work in childcare, education, fitness, or general employment, CPR may meet your requirement.

What Is First Aid?

First Aid is the immediate care given to someone who is injured or suddenly ill before emergency services arrive.

It’s not advanced medical treatment.
It’s stabilization.

First Aid training covers:

• Allergic reactions (EpiPen use)
• Heat and cold emergencies
• Shock management

In many emergencies — especially in rural areas — what you do in the first few minutes matters.

AHA vs. Red Cross CPR Certification — What’s the Difference?

I’m often asked which certification is “better.”

The answer depends on where you’re working.

American Heart Association (AHA)
Commonly required by hospitals and clinical employers.
Strong focus on standardized, evidence-based training.
Often preferred in healthcare settings.

American Red Cross
Widely accepted by schools, childcare centers, businesses, and community organizations.

Recognized nationally.

Strong option for workplace and general certification needs.

Both certifications:
