I think a lot of people know that Juneteenth is a holiday, but not everyone knows the story behind it.

On January 1, 1863, the Emancipation Proclamation declared enslaved people in Confederate states free. But for many, freedom wasn't experienced right away.

It wasn't until June 19, 1865, more than two years later, that Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that enslaved people were finally free.

Take a moment and think about that for a second. I want you to imagine freedom being yours, but not knowing it. And the people who do know, choose to keep it from you for 2 whole years before you find out from the people sent to enforce the new law.

This is why Juneteenth matters.

It's a celebration of freedom, resilience, and the people who endured unimaginable hardship while holding on to hope that many died before ever seeing for themselves.

For me, it's also a reminder that we still have a responsibility to love our neighbors well, stand against injustice, and make sure every person is seen, valued, and treated with dignity.

So, this weekend, I'm going to celebrate freedom as I honor those who came & died before me. And I pledge to keep working toward the kind of community where everyone has the opportunity to flourish.
