On November 21, 1864, it's said President Lincoln penned a letter to Lydia Bixby of Massachusetts, a widow and mother of five sons killed fighting for the Union in the Civil War. “Weak and fruitless must be any words of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming.” The letter was read in a transcription published in a Boston Newspaper. The original letter has never been located. You can pay your respects to "The Great Emancipator" by visiting his tomb in Springfield, Illinois.
