Lynn Margulis

1938-2011

The woman in science we’d like to highlight a prominent member of the scientific and UMass communities .

Dr. Lynn Margulis was an evolutionary biologist that revolutionized biology by furthering the theory that eukaryotic organelles were once prokaryotic cells, known now as the endosymbiont theory. Her work is widely considered one of the most important contributions to biology in the 20th century. Dr. Margulis served as a UMass professor here from 1988 until her death in 2011.

The painting “Endosymbiosis: An Homage to Lynn Margulis” was done by Shoshanah Dubiner, an accomplished artist that takes inspiration from the forms of the natural world. She is currently based in Ashland, Oregon.
