The one band Slash said had the best riffs of them all While Slash has his own catalog of classic licks, he felt that some of the greatest guitarists had an endless amount of classics.

A Slice of '70s Rock Life: The Day The Sweet Said Goodbye to the Grey

Man, I’m digging through my old vinyl tonight and landed on The Sweet’s debut, Funny How Sweet Co-Co Can Be (1971). We all remember the big Chinnichap singles that defined early Glam—"Little W***y" felt like it was played every hour! But do you remember flipping the record and landing on their own compositions? That’s where the real drama was. My mind keeps spinning with “Santa Monica Sunshine.”

You can practically hear the band dreaming themselves out of their manager’s office and the rain-soaked UK. This song is everything they wanted to be: driving, full of great guitar, and drenched in the American West Coast fantasy. It’s a bittersweet feeling, knowing they had to sing about "Little W***y" on the A-side just to afford to put this raw, yearning track—about leaving all the bad times behind for a place where the Santa Monica sun shines—on the B-side. It’s the sound of four young rockers with big hair, packed onto a double-decker bus, dreaming of driving a convertible down the PCH. The real rock and roll story of the 70s wasn't always on the charts; sometimes, it was a desperate, hopeful road trip fantasy hidden on a deep cut. What a tune. Makes you want to book a flight and find a beach.
