We’ve been busy both with Soil House and in our home garden over the past month. It seems like spring is glitching hard this year—hopefully it settles in soon. But nonetheless, ’tis the season for the garden!

Check out what’s been happening throughout the month of March.

We’ve been experimenting with a new compost bin setup for the garden, and so far, we’re really encouraged by the results.

This build was inspired by the Johnson Su Compost Bioreactor approach. We used rebar mesh and deer netting for structure, along with vertical air channels that go straight down to the soil. Before setting the bin in place, we loosened the ground with a broadfork to help create a connection between the soil and the compost—hopefully allowing oxygen, microbes, and biology to move freely between the two.

Right now, the internal temperature is sitting at about 150ºF, which tells us the bacterial life is very active. At these temperatures, any w**d seeds and most pathogens will more than likely be killed off, leaving behind clean, biologically rich compost.

Still early in the process, but it’s exciting to watch it come to life. We’ll keep you posted on how it develops.

We’ve been experimenting with a few different potting soil mixes lately, and this is one that’s been working really well for us. 🌱

Our current blend is simple:
• Equal parts topsoil
• Fine biochar
• Worm castings

We like it because it creates a nice, living soil structure and skips ingredients like peat moss and perlite. The idea was inspired from Rodale’s "The Encyclopedia of Organic Gardening", and it’s been a fun one to try.

If you enjoy tinkering with your soil mixes, this might be a good blend to experiment with in your own pots and starts.

Who is sitting by the warmth of the compost bin this Christmas season? 🔥🎄
There’s something magical about cracking open a hot compost pile on a cold day — steam rising, microbes working overtime, and that cozy reminder that life in the soil never takes a holiday.

Cold air, warm compost… pure winter joy.

Want to turn your worm bin fast composting machine? 🪱⚡ Here’s a vermicompost tip that makes a BIG difference…
Blend your food scraps before feeding your worms.

When scraps go into the bin already broken down, your worms can eat faster as the microbes break down the food much quicker, and your whole bin stays healthier and more productive. That means more black gold🌟 and less waiting. 🌱🪴

Tiny tweak. Major worm bin upgrade.
