Most faceted gemstones are under 0.5 carats due to extensive natural fracturing in the rough. Prices can range anywhere from $300 to thousands of dollars per carat depending on the cut, clarity, and color.Composition: (Na,Ca)₄₋₈(Al₆Si₆)O₂₄(SO₄S)₁₋₂. It forms in silica-poor volcanic rocks and is also a major component in the semi-precious rock Lapis Lazuli.Fluorescence: A unique feature of haüyne is that it frequently fluoresces bright orange to reddish under shortwave UV light.Hardness: It measures 5.5 to 6 on the Mohs hardness scale. Because of this softness and its good cleavage, it is typically used in earrings or pendants rather than heavy-wear rings.Sources & SourcingWhile first described in 1807 from samples found in Vesuvian lavas near Monte Somma in Italy, the most famous gem-quality source is the Eifel District in Germany.
