From the time of the Mothers of the Believers — women who were themselves pillars of Islamic scholarship — the pursuit of knowledge has always been a divine right for Muslim women, not a privilege to be granted or withheld. Yet for so many sisters, especially in Black American Muslim communities, that pursuit comes with an unspoken resistance: raised eyebrows, discouragement from within, and a culture that too often mistakes silence for piety.
In this Muslim Storytellers segment, Rhadiyah sits down with Dr. Islaah Abd’al-Rahim — a woman who earned her doctorate in Islamic Sciences not in spite of her faith, but through it. Together they trace a lineage of women scholars that stretches back to Sayyidah Aisha (رضي الله عنها), whose narrations form the backbone of the Sunnah, and to whom the greatest male companions of the Prophet ﷺ turned for guidance and correction.
This conversation is for every sister who has ever been made to feel that her ambition was too big, her questions too bold, or her dreams too far outside what was expected of her. It is a reminder that the first word revealed to our Prophet ﷺ was Iqra — Read. And that command was never gender-conditional.
