On this Independence Day, we pause not just to celebrate, but to reflect.

As Americans, we wake up with freedoms others around the world can only imagine—freedom to speak, to believe, to challenge, to rise, to train, to lead. These freedoms are not guaranteed by chance. They are protected by the brave.

To those who have served, are serving, or have stood beside someone in uniform—thank you. You are the reason we can gather in a dojo, speak our minds, chase our dreams, and raise our children with choice and conviction.

At Touchstone Karate Academy, we don’t take those freedoms lightly. Discipline, respect, and honor aren’t just martial arts values—they’re the foundations of a free society.

Today, we celebrate liberty.
But every day, we train to be worthy of it.

Learning to break fall—forward, backward, and sideways—is a vital safety skill. It helps protect the head and brain by redirecting the impact through the arms and body, spreading the force across a larger surface area to reduce injury.

Reaching out instinctively to catch yourself—what’s commonly called a FOOSH (Fall On Outstretched Hands)—can lead to serious injuries. This often results in fractures to the small bones of the hands, forearms and the wlbow joint.

Let’s train with purpose and stay safe. Practicing proper break falls now can protect you when it matters most.

Not Just a Coin—A Standard of Excellence

In the Army, a challenge coin isn’t something you buy. It’s something you earn.

Usually presented by a superior—often at the recommendation of another leader—these coins are awarded for more than just showing up. They’re given for going above and beyond, for displaying teamwork when it counts, for solving problems no one else could, or for showing up—consistently, humbly, and relentlessly—when the mission demanded more than most were willing to give.

They symbolize perseverance, discipline, and dedication—the kind that happens when no one’s watching. The kind that pushes through discomfort, carries others on its back, and keeps moving forward because quitting just isn’t in the DNA.

I share these not out of a “look at how amazing I am” mindset, but as a reminder of how someone who once thought very little of himself when he first joined the Army has achieved more than he ever imagined. These coins symbolize that journey. That growth. That transformation.

So when you see someone receive a coin, understand: it’s not about a piece of metal.

It’s about a story—of effort, character, and leadership that stood out.

And that story?
It’s one worth telling.

Not long ago, we had the incredible honor of watching some of our amazing students take the stage in Singing in the Rain Jr.—and they absolutely lit it up! Their energy, presence, and passion were on full display, and we couldn’t be prouder.

It means the world to us to see our students stepping into leadership, confidence, and creativity in all areas of life—not just in the dojo. Whether you’re performing, competing, or just chasing something you love, we’ll always be there, supporting you every step of the way.

Keep dreaming big. Keep shining bright. You inspire us more than you know.

We teach patience.
We teach empathy.
We teach how to stay calm in uncertain situations.

But NOTHING tests your training like sitting in the passenger seat while your oldest child starts driving.

Forget sparring. This is emotional combat.
You breathe (so you don’t scream), you smile (so they stay confident), and you nod calmly when they say, “I think I made the right choice” as they run a yellow light. 🤦🏻‍♂️

If you can keep your cool when the curb barely survives a right turn, congratulations…
