#OTD in 2010, Lance Cpl. Kyle Carpenter was serving as an Automatic Rifleman with 2d Battalion, 9th Marines, 1st Marine Division in Helmand Province, Afghanistan when his rooftop security position came under attack. When an enemy gr***de landed nearby, Carpenter, without hesitation and in complete disregard for his personal safety, threw himself on the explosive, effectively absorbing the blast and saving the life of a fellow Marine.

Carpenter’s injuries were substantial, and his recovery took nearly three years and more than 40 surgeries. Throughout his recovery, Carpenter has inspired thousands of people with his story of courage and resilience.

On June 19, 2014, he was awarded the Medal of Honor for his exceptional bravery and devotion to duty. He is the youngest living Medal of Honor recipient.

🦅Body Bearer Caisson Training🦅

U.S. Marines with the United States Marine Corps Body Bearers conduct caisson refamiliarization training aboard Fort Myer-Henderson Hall, Va. This opportunity prepares the Body Bearers to support the Army's return to using horse-drawn caissons for funerals at Arlington National Cemetery starting in June. The use of horse-drawn caissons for funerals is a long-standing tradition, with the Marines working alongside the Army to honor fallen service members. Caisson training prepares the Body Bearers to carry out their solemn duty with the dignity and precision the mission demands.
