Our Mission
Former Fosters was created to be a resource for foster youth. We are comprised of adults who have aged out of foster care and wish to mentor current foster youth through their transition from foster youth to adult. Each foster child's ability to succeed in life is affected by the experiences that led them to be placed in the foster care system. The trouble doesn't stop there. Once the child is placed in a foster or a shelter home their is a chance that the people that are appointed to care for the youth can create situations that harm the child further. The difficult upbringing that these children must endure is why 40 to 50% of foster children will never complete high school. 66% of them will be homeless, go to jail or die within one year of leaving the foster care system at 18 years of age. Additionally 80% of the prison population once was in foster care, and girls in foster care are 600% more likely than the general population to become pregnant before the age of 21 (national statistics provided by Arrow Child and Family Ministries). We at Former Fosters believe that these statistics are unacceptable, and through advocacy and mentoring we intend to improve the chances of foster children living a healthy and successful life.
