Sixteen years ago today, I was reminded that "The Notebook" isn't just a movie. It’s real life, and on this day, I watched it play out right before my eyes. Years ago I worked as a concierge for a retirement community. During that time I had the privilege of helping and spending time with a sweet couple for three years. There came a time when husband’s Alzheimer’s had dramatically worsened, so the decision was made, to admit him to a memory care center. I offered to take him to have him admitted. Watching them part was shattering. They hugged, cried, and said goodbye, leaving her in tears in my rearview mirror as I drove him to his new home.
On the 30-minute drive over, he said her name over and over again followed by, "I never want to forget her name, I'm afraid I'm going to forget her name."
Facebook brought this memory up and it made me cry reliving it today, but it also reminded me how profound it is to care for people during their most vulnerable chapters. True love never fails, even when the mind does.
