Leaving Everything to Follow
After experiencing this miracle, the disciples made a radical decision - they left everything and followed Jesus. They walked away from their boats, their business, their security, and their familiar way of life. But notice what they were really leaving behind: they left behind the nights of frustration, the disappointment of empty nets, and a lifetime of just getting by. They had experienced one moment of incredible success, but what they abandoned was a pattern of struggle and limitation. Following Jesus doesn't always mean leaving your job or moving across the world. Sometimes it means leaving behind attitudes, habits, or mindsets that keep you stuck. It might mean leaving behind the fear that holds you back, the bitterness that weighs you down, or the self-doubt that limits your potential. When we truly encounter Jesus in our ordinary places, we're compelled to leave behind whatever keeps us from fully embracing his calling on our lives. The disciples discovered that following Jesus led to a life far more meaningful than anything they could have achieved on their own. The same invitation extends to us today - to leave behind what limits us and step into the extraordinary life God has planned.
Bible Verse
'So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.' - Luke 5:11 (New International Version (NIV))
Reflection Question
What do you need to 'leave behind' in order to more fully follow Jesus and embrace his calling on your life?
Sermon Quote
They leave behind the nights of frustration. They leave behind their disappointment. It wasn't until Jesus stepped into their boats that everything in their lives got better.
Prayer
Jesus, give me the courage to leave behind whatever holds me back from following you completely. Help me trust that your plans for my life are better than my own.

When Empty Nets Become Calling
The miracle catch was overwhelming - so much so that the nets began to break and they needed another boat to help. But something even more significant happened in that moment. Simon Peter, faced with this display of divine power, fell at Jesus' knees and said, "Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!" He recognized he was in the presence of someone holy. Yet Jesus didn't leave. Instead, he transformed Peter's sense of unworthiness into a calling: "Don't be afraid; from now on you will fish for people." This is how God works in our lives. He takes our empty nets - our failures, disappointments, and feelings of inadequacy - and transforms them into purpose. That job rejection might lead to a better opportunity. That broken relationship might teach you compassion for others going through similar pain. That financial struggle might develop your dependence on God and your heart for those in need. God doesn't waste our empty seasons; he uses them to prepare us for our calling. What feels like failure today might be the very experience God uses to equip you for tomorrow's ministry.
Bible Verse
'When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.' - Luke 5:6 (New International Version (NIV))
Reflection Question
What disappointment or 'empty net' in your life might God be wanting to transform into a calling or purpose?
Sermon Quote
In that moment, Jesus turns empty nets into a calling. And I absolutely believe that Jesus wants to do that for us today.
Prayer
God, help me trust that you can transform my disappointments into purpose. Show me how my struggles can become a source of ministry to others.
