Jeremy Marsh writes character-driven, cinematic fiction about flawed people.

Since releasing my book, a few people have asked me the same question:

“How did you finally finish writing one?”

The honest answer is that I dragged myself to the finish line.

For years I would sit down with a story in my head and stall almost immediately. Not because I didn’t know the story, but because I would get stuck in the details that make a world feel real.

Character names. Geography. Research rabbit holes.

At one point I spent two hours trying to name a character.

Eventually I just closed the laptop.

That happened more times than I care to admit.

What finally helped was technology removing some of that friction. Tools like ChatGPT helped me move past the things that used to stall me out so I could focus on the part of storytelling that actually matters.

The people.

When I wrote The Portal, I wanted the technology to feel plausible enough that readers wouldn’t spend the whole story questioning it. Much of what appears in the book could realistically exist within the next decade.

Once readers believe the world, they can focus on the characters.

And that’s where the story actually lives.

We used to say goodbye, and while it hurt, time eventually let the edges of those memories soften.
But today, the "lines" never fade. We have chat histories that stay green, voice notes that play back in high definition, and social media profiles that act like digital ghosts. We are the first generation that doesn't just remember the dead. We live with their digital footprints every time we pick up our phones.
My tagline, "Grief written in lines that never fade," isn’t just a bit of prose. It’s the reality of the modern age.
In The Portal, I wanted to dig into what happens when that digital echo becomes something more. It’s a story about the thin, pixelated line between holding on and being haunted.
If you’ve ever stared at a "Last Seen" timestamp and wondered what was on the other side, this book is for you.

How do you feel about the digital footprints we leave behind? Is it a comfort to you, or does it make moving on harder?

This picture was taken three years ago today. At that time, the idea that life can change in an instant felt like nothing more than a saying—a fleeting thought. It wasn’t until six months later that we were forced to truly understand and live its meaning.
