The Congregation of the Aggrieved 25/05/2021

Have you been going to your Mill River School Board meetings? You're either part of the solution or you are the problem.

Rep. Art Peterson of Wallingford, Clarendon, Proctor and West Rutland was the only Representative to vote against H.101. No bill's perfect, but it's worth noting that everyone else valued kids' literacy enough to vote in favor of the bill.
We deserve better than an extremist who votes against literacy.

VERMONT HOUSE GIVES PRELIMINARY APPROVAL TO EARLY LITERACY BILL

Today the House gave preliminary approval to H.101, a bill that will strengthen early literacy instruction for Vermont students in grades preK to 3. The bill taps into $3 million in federal stimulus funds to provide grants to supervisory unions — money our schools will use to improve literacy teaching and outcomes and ensure that students who struggle receive instruction from highly skilled teachers.

Grants will support professional development, coaching and training, and using data to promote continuous improvement. The bill also creates a new position at the Agency of Education – a statewide literacy coordinator – and sets up a council to advise the AOE on how to improve and sustain reading skills for all students, grades K-12. Finally, the bill requires a review of Vermont’s teacher-prep programs to understand how our future educators are training.

According to a 2019 national assessment, only 37 percent of Vermont’s fourth-graders were proficient in reading, a percentage that declined from 2017. This legislation puts funding and powerful intent into our goal of ensuring that all students receive the literacy support they need to succeed.

Republicans prove yet again that their so-called "law and order" is really just code for state-sponsored hate and violence.
