NIST 800-171 vs CMMC — what's the difference? 🤔

NIST 800-171 is the standard: 110 controls to protect Controlled Unclassified Information. It's been required by DFARS since 2017 — and widely self-attested (read: often ignored).

CMMC is the enforcement: independent verification that you actually meet NIST 800-171. No certification, no contract.

NIST is the 'what.' CMMC is the 'prove it.'

Before migrating to the cloud, ask these 5 questions:

1. What data is sensitive or regulated?
2. Who owns security post-migration? (You own more than you think)
3. Does your compliance requirement allow this cloud?
4. What's the access control model?
5. What's the exit plan?
