Florida students are still being punished and singled out for wearing their natural hair in school. This is unacceptable. Braids, locs, afros, and protective styles are not violations of discipline or professionalism. That is why I filed the CROWN Act, which would protect our students from this type of discrimination.
To help move this bill forward, Black Girls Govern is collecting stories from students who have experienced natural hair discrimination in Florida schools and universities. Stories like yours can make the difference between this bill passing or not.

That’s a wrap on Committee Week 5! My caucus and I were in Tallahassee attending hearings and fine-tuning the legislation we’ll carry this session. Along with productive meetings with Tampa Bay leaders, I joined my Senate colleagues at a press conference to announce my new bill, which would add a critical check on the Governor’s misuse of state emergency powers. Now, I’m headed back to the district for local events and will return to the Capitol next week!

Tampa Bay deserves transit that works for everyone. I’m proud to have helped secure $32M for HART through the Low or No Emission and Bus & Bus Facilities Program, the largest award in Florida and in the top 10% nationally.
This funding will:
🚍 Replace 33 old diesel buses with cleaner, low-emission CNG vehicles
👩🏾🔧 Expand workforce development and apprenticeship programs for local fleet technicians
Investing in modern, reliable transit is essential for Tampa Bay’s growth. Thank you to Congresswoman Kathy Castor for spearheading the effort to create stronger jobs and a Tampa Bay that moves forward with opportunity for all!
The Florida House is once again pushing a bill to lower the firearm purchase age, gutting the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Public Safety Act and dishonoring the legacy of those we lost in Parkland. I am disgusted that lawmakers would continue to ignore the loud, urgent pleas of families and students who are simply asking to be kept safe. It is past time to put public safety over politics.
If this bill reaches the House floor, I will vote resoundingly no, and I urge my colleagues to stand with our communities and do the same.
