Memorial Day is not ultimately about cookouts, sales, or a long weekend.

It is about remembering the men and women who left home wearing the uniform of this country and never returned to the people who loved them.

Some died on distant battlefields.
Some aboard ships.
Some in aircraft.
Some alongside brothers they considered family.

All gave up futures they would never get to live.

Parents lost sons and daughters.
Spouses lost husbands and wives.
Children grew up without mothers and fathers.
Entire generations carry freedoms purchased by sacrifices they themselves never had to make.

That is why remembrance matters.

Not because words can repay a debt like that — they cannot — but because forgetting would diminish the weight of what was given.

Today we pause to honor courage, sacrifice, duty, and love of country. We remember those who carried burdens most of us will never fully understand, and who gave everything they had.

May we live lives worthy of that sacrifice.
