Black Trans History Month - Lucy Hicks Anderson (1886-1954)

She was born in Kentucky and at an early age expressed the wish that people call her Lucy rather than her birth name. Surprisingly for the time a doctor advised her mother to raise her as a girl. In her life she married twice, was a professional baker and chef, a socialite and a s*x worker. In Oxnard California she ran a boarding house that operated as a speakeasy and brothel. She ultimately went to prison for perjury because in the eyes of the law she "lied" about her s*x on her marriage certificates. Her response was simple and to the point: "I defy any doctor in the world to prove that I am not a woman, I have lived, dressed, acted just what I am, a woman."

The Handbook of LGBT Elders refers to Lucy as "one of the earliest documented cases of an African-American transgender person."
