New Jersey received an average of 0.82 inches of rain over the past week. Parts of my neighborhood reported 1.16 inches of rain over a 2-day period. Meanwhile, other parts of the state received 1 to 6 inches of rain from slow-moving thunderstorms.

A flooded garden can cause root suffocation, contamination, and plant decline, but quick drainage, careful cleanup, and safety precautions can significantly improve recovery. Some edible crops may need to be discarded depending on contamination.

𝗙𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗗𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀
Flood severity depends on the amount of rainfall, water depth, soil drainage, and how long water remains. Common impacts include:

💦Root suffocation & rot — standing water cuts oxygen to roots.

💦Weak, stressed plants — more vulnerable to pests and disease.

💦Visible symptoms — yellowing, wilting, leaf curl, defoliation, dieback.

💦Higher risk for shallow-rooted annuals and food crops.

*It may take a week or more to see the full extent of the damage.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗗𝗼 𝗜𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆
🛠️Drain excess water — dig furrows, poke holes, or divert water with hoses/pumps.

🛠️Avoid compacting soil — don’t walk on saturated beds.

🛠️Wear protective gear — floodwater may contain chemicals, sewage, petroleum.

🛠️Prevent cross‑contamination — sanitize tools (1 tbsp bleach per gallon of water).

🛠️Rinse plants — remove silt, mud, especially saltwater residue.

𝗘𝗱𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗖𝗿𝗼𝗽𝘀 𝗔𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴

Food safety depends on the level of contamination:

🍅 Storm surge or sewage‑contaminated water can leave toxic residue on soil and plants.
In such cases, edible crops should not be consumed.

🍅 Heavy rain flooding (non‑contaminated) poses less risk, but washing and caution are still essential.

𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸:

🛡️Improve soil drainage and avoid low‑lying planting areas.

🛡️Consider rain gardens, berms, or swales to redirect water.

🛡️Use resilient plants that tolerate occasional waterlogging.
