If you're not familiar with the online game Kahoot!, you should check it out. It is an interactive game that all students play together at the same time. I was doing a "Getting to Know You" Kahoot for the library with middle schoolers and high schoolers. One of the questions was about their favorite fiction genre, and there were four options. One class had the same number for each category - a librarian's dream! Then, one of the questions was about the type of home they would like to live in. The options were: mansion, apartment, house, or bridge. Thankfully, no one in that particular class chose bridge, but I pointed out that across all the classes, apartment was the lowest vote-getter. When I pointed that out and asked the students why they didn't want to live in an apartment, one student said, "Well, you have to pay for those!"😂
When a 5th grader gets in trouble for refusing to join the class for the weekly library lesson, you expect some lip, but you don't expect the student to tell the principal that he's angry because "library is for reading, not learning!" Things that make you go hmmm...
