MHN Performance Horsemanship LLC
Where Competition and Horsemanship Meet. C**t Starting, Training, Lessons, Clinics. Focus on Ranch Riding Events and Good Horsemanship.
Emma’s first time working on Reining circles, using LittleBug. No speed changes this go round, just working on size and shape. These two are starting to make a good pair.
Come join us for lessons at MHN Performance Horsemanship LLC. Bring your own horse, or use one of ours.
We have a custom levels program that we created with 8 levels to help you become a well rounded Horseman/Horsewoman. This program covers both groundwork and ridden work, with each level building on the skills from the previous level.
If you are interested, we also offer training and c**t starting. Our Full Training is good for tune ups, c**t starts, and improving upon your show horse. We also offer a Performance Package to help keep you and your show horse tuned up. In the performance package, you get 8 lessons and your horse gets 8 training sessions per month.

GROUNDWORK CLINIC
Come out and Join us for our Groundwork Clinic on September 26th! The clinic will be at Fox Run Ranch in McGregor, Tx.
This clinic will have two sessions, one for beginners and one for intermediate/advanced. Come and improve on the ground, no matter your skill level! We have a limit of 6 individuals per session to make sure that each participant gets individual help and walks away with more confidence.
ANNNOUNCMENT
With a baby on the way in October, we are cancelling our other clinics we had planned for the year. We had thoughts of moving our other clinics to November/December but with our first on the way, we decided we needed to focus on learning to be first time parents.
We have already sent out refunds to those that had placed a deposit for the clinics that have now been cancelled.
We are looking forward to being new parents and will regroup with clinics for 2027!
“It’s a dog! It’s a cat! It’s a horse! It’s a…. Giraffe???”
Why can we not independently learn to eat healthy things instead of leaves 🤦♂️😂
Amelia and Amado working on bridling, and changing bend in the bridle. Amado is teaching Amelia the feel, and letting her learn on him to take home to her horse Butterbean.
Thanks to Amelia for always being a great student.

Congrats to Emma! She completed level 1 of our program last week and got her certificate yesterday!
She’s been in our program for awhile but I’ve been having a lot of my students go back through. Now that I have my own program, I’ve added in some things I either didn’t have access to or wasn’t allowed to do working for others in the past, so a lot of our students have been rounding out their skills both on the ground and under saddle, becoming more complete Horsemen and Horsewomen.
On the back of her certificate is all of the skills she had to complete to finish level one. We don’t do “tests” in our program because I feel they are ineffective. We do the skill until the student can do the skill without having to be reminded (generally). Anyone can study for a test… and then forget it 24 hrs later without gaining anything. Here, they have to do these skills until they reach the level’s required comprehension level, with each level requiring more from the student.

It’s official!
Got my first judges card through the American Stock Horse Association. Very excited to see what the future holds!
While I probably won’t judge many shows, I’m excited for the opportunity to continue to develop my eye in helping coach my students and train my horses. Never thought that I’d be getting my first judges card at 27. While it truthfully doesn’t matter, I did feel good to be the youngest in the room and pushing myself to take the leap anyway.
Thank you to all of those that have helped me get this far!
Liesel’s first time learning to ride one handed on RedBugs earlier this week.
Liesel will soon be graduating Baylor in June getting her PhD in Educational Psychology and already has her Masters in Curriculum & Instruction.
Liesel will finish up lessons with us in June to move back home, and while we are sad to see her go, we are super excited to see what the future holds for her. She has been an awesome student and we know her future in the educational field is bright and she will do an awesome job for all of her students! She has already accepted a job in her field and we know she will do great things.
Mrs. Dawn back on her horse, Leoti.
Leoti has been a tough nut to crack, but we're moving in the right direction!
This is a complete 180 from the past where Leoti would'v been chomping at the bit to go and run, but now she's settling. Leoti is a horse that I would say had some decent training along the way but it didn't prepare her for the intended goal when it comes to under saddle. She probably would've been fine in any kind of speed event.
On the ground, it seems like they only used one method and they took it too far - if anything goes wrong, she thought she had to RUNNNN RUNNN RUNNN! While it is good to correct horses by moving their feet, overdoing anything has unintended consequences. Leoti would get pushy, crowd, rear, run at mach 7 while you only asked for a walk, and get vindictive (although thankfully there was not follow through on vindictiveness).
So, we've been doing the opposite and slowing everything down. Setting up ground drills that make it hard to go fast and easy to go slow (figure 8s around cones as one example), acting like mistakes are no big deal while still correcting, and showing her that sitting still is an acceptable answer (ground tying). Under saddle, we've done lots of circles, flex to stops (to stay out of mouth while her cues are being built), and putting steady rides on her where she just has to walk or trot at the same speed. It's nothing fancy, no tricks, just building confidence and patiently showing her the right answer.
We aren't done with her yet, but we are glad to see the progess and excited to keep moving her forward to be a well mannered trail horse. Also big Kudos to Mrs. Dawn, Leoti has been in our "Performance Package" where Leoti is worked by me 2x per week and Dawn has been taking 2 lessons per week to learn how to help Leoti. Dawn always comes with a great attitude and is willing to learn whatever she needs to for Leoti!
