G2theG
G2theG - the duo of Gary & Alex (formerly Outside the Lines) playing old rock 'n' roll faves, blues, originals, and even some jazz for good measure!
Life, Music, and the Temporariness of it All
Saturday is my day to do housework. It's also my day to listen to housework-worthy music, which in many cases is the late, great, Chris Robinson Brotherhood (CRB). Late because the soulful, Grateful Dead-esque guitar solos will be no more, as guitarist Neal Casal committed su***de in August. I'm still sad, angry, wistful, wondering. Great what with powerhouse vocals from Chris (Black Crowes lead singer) and strong writing, they were lightning in a bottle. Gary and I saw them every time they were at the 9:30 Club (four? five times?), and at the Virginia State Theater. Every time - magic. I'm mourning the loss of those magical experiences with Neal's passing, and the fact that CRB is no more.
It's been nearly a month since I had a close call myself. I was walking on Memorial Street crossing South Kings Highway with the light when boom! A car plowed into me and sent me catapulting through the air. By some miracle, I wasn't seriously hurt other than a wrenched shoulder and bumps and bruises, though I did go to the hospital to get checked over. The experience was scary (obviously), but in a weird way, good too - so many people in my network offered to help me, bring me dinner, do my laundry. My work sent me beautiful flowers. The driver was so concerned about me - I think she was more worried than I was! (Of course, I was in shock at the time).
The experience has left me with two good impressions: First, that there are so many good people in the world, in spite of all the craziness around us. Second, that my time on Earth is limited, and perhaps this was a wakeup call. It's focused me on what I want to accomplish - put together all my new songs into a new album and stick it on YouTube, figure out if I want to focus on them instead of playing covers with Gary, especially since he's been wanting to play more jazz and stretch his musical muscles. Not sure, but after our December 8 gig I'll start seriously thinking about it. Life is indeed short, and you never know if you might get hit by a bus. Or a car.
