John Morton-Finney’s life story isn’t just about longevity — it’s about legacy. Born in 1889 to parents who had been enslaved, Morton-Finney went on to make history in ways that few others have.

A Buffalo Soldier in World War I, an educator for 47 years, and a lawyer who earned 11 degrees, Morton-Finney’s achievements were groundbreaking. He practiced law until he was 107, making him one of the longest-serving attorneys in U.S. history — and one of the most dedicated advocates for civil rights and education in his community.

Morton-Finney didn’t just break barriers; he built bridges for others. His contributions to education and law, alongside his relentless pursuit of knowledge, have left an indelible mark on Indianapolis and beyond. Today, his legacy is honored with an educational center in his name, reminding us of his trailblazing work.
