In Korean culture, the 용 (yong) is a dragon believed to be an omnipotent being who protects, brings fortune, and seeks justice. The 용 begins as an 이무기 (imugi), a serpent-like being, and only becomes a 용 after finding an orb, called an 여의주 (yeouiju), which brings them their power. A 용 will never have more than one 여의주, or they will always remain an 이무기. The more 여의주 it collects, the more power it gains, but it can never rise to the revered status of a 용. This was meant to serve as a warning for greed, a warning to those seeking power by taking and oppressing. May the 용 in our lives bring justice to the oppressed, and may we remember our ancestors who fought for us to be here today. Happy Lunar New Year, and may the Year of the Dragon bring us much fortune and peace this year!
