Is it time to get your audio/video system in shape?

Don’t fall prey to content providers.

I ‘m always amazed when I walk into a bar or restaurant that has multiple TV’s and notice a cable/satellite box connected to each TV. For example, there is a bar in Big Bend that has 22 DirecTV boxes, a box for each TV. So, what does this tell me? It tells me that the owner didn’t consult with an Audio/Video professional before the install and fell prey to their sales practices.

The truth is, they don’t need that many boxes unless they want to have the ability to watch 22 different shows at the same time. Therefore, what is the rule of thumb? You require 1 box per viewing channel. For this instance, let’s say they have the NFL ticket and want the ability to show 4 different games at the same time. That means they would require only a total of 4 boxes.

If they are leasing their boxes, let’s say at $7.00 per month, that means instead of paying $154.00 a month they could be paying $28.00 a month to accomplish the same result. In most cases, DirecTV now requires businesses to purchase their boxes, at a cost of $400.00 each! In this example, that means this bar would’ve paid out $8,800 verse the $1,600 they should’ve paid, just to utilize their services.

Talk about solidifying an account for many years to come. And there’s the rub. What business owner would change service providers after an investment like that. Even if DirecTV increases their monthly fees after their introductory offer, they know the likelihood of the customer to cancel their service is slim due to the initial investment.

So, before you sign up with any service provider, make sure you consult an A/V professional first. They will help you determine your requirements and have your best interest at hand.
