Winter doesn’t magically “turn off” pests—what it does do is push them closer to the things they want most: warmth, food, and moisture. That’s why colder months can be peak season for “How did that get in here?!” moments, especially with rodents and hardy indoor pests that stay active once they’re inside.

The good news: you can make your home a lot less welcoming without pro chemicals and without replacing your professional pest management program (PMP). Think of this as the homeowner “assist” that helps your service work even better.

The Winter Rule: Block Access + Remove Attractions

A lot of winter prevention comes down to two moves:

Keep them out (exclusion)

Stop feeding and sheltering them (sanitation + decluttering)

Most pests only need a tiny opportunity—especially mice, which can squeeze through openings as small as ¼ inch.

15-Minute “Bug Ninja” Winter Checklist

Grab a flashlight and do this once now, and again after big cold snaps.

1) Pantry Lockdown (the easiest win)

Move cereals, flour, sugar, snacks, and pet food into airtight containers (bins beat boxes).

Wipe crumbs and spills fast; don’t leave dirty dishes overnight.

Take trash out regularly and use tight-fitting lids; rinse recycling/containers.

Avoid storing food in garages/sheds if you can—those spaces are easier for pests to access.

2) Seal the “¼-Inch Problem” (doors, pipes, and sneaky gaps)

Focus on these high-traffic entry zones:

Door bottoms: add/replace door sweeps and weather stripping.

Utility lines & pipe penetrations: seal gaps with outdoor-rated caulk; for rodent-risk gaps, use steel wool or hardware cloth as appropriate.

Screens & vents: repair damaged screens and check attic/crawl-space vents and doors.

3) De-Clutter the Cozy Hideouts

Rodents and insects love undisturbed storage zones:

Clear and reorganize attics, basements, and storage rooms.

Store seasonal décor in sealed plastic bins, not cardboard.

Quick holiday habit: inspect décor as you bring it down and before you pack it back up.

4) Dry It Out (moisture = pest magnet)

Even in winter, indoor humidity and small leaks can keep pests comfortable:

Fix drips under sinks, around tubs, water heaters, and laundry hookups.

Use a dehumidifier in damp basements/crawl spaces when needed.

Keep gutters/downspouts flowing so water isn’t pooling where it shouldn’t.

5) Firewood: Treat It Like a “Pest Apartment Complex”

Firewood can shelter pests and then deliver them to your doorstep:

Store firewood at least ~20 feet from the home, and keep it elevated off the ground when possible.

Bring in only what you’ll burn soon—don’t stack a season’s worth in the garage “for convenience.”

Quick Myth-Bust: “Cold Weather Kills All Bugs”

Not quite. Plenty of pests can remain active indoors during winter, especially once they’ve found warmth and food.
And while “natural” tricks can sometimes help short-term (like disrupting ant trails), they’re not a replacement for professional treatment when an issue is established.

When DIY Stops and Your PMP Should Step In

Call your pro (or schedule an inspection) if you notice:

Droppings, gnaw marks, or scratching sounds

Persistent ant trails that keep coming back

Signs of moisture damage with pest activity nearby

Any termite warning signs (and yes—winter can be a smart time to schedule inspections)
