Two weeks after the earthquakes that devastated part of Venezuela’s central coast, we almost canceled this edition of Open Zine. Then we remembered that silence is also a form of surrender.
This issue turns toward La Guaira, not only as a site of loss, but as a place of memory, history, resistance, and cultural weight. A port. A gateway. A wound. A home.

This issue was born from grief — and from love. In the wake of the double earthquake that struck Venezuela on June 24, 2026, we wanted to ask: what does art do in the face of tragedy? What does it hold that words alone cannot?
Inside, we explore the quiet power of culinary arts, how chefs become keepers of memory, comfort, and identity when everything else is uncertain. We revisit La Guaira, once one of the most beautiful coastal getaways in the country, and the Caracas–La Guaira highway, an engineering marvel of its time, a road that connected a nation to the sea.
This is more than a magazine. It’s a tribute. A reminder that beauty and memory endure, even when the ground doesn’t.
