Wildlife management shouldn’t be about controlling animals — it should be about governing ourselves. Because here’s the truth we rarely say out loud: Wild animals don’t create the crises they’re “managed” for. We do. Wolves aren’t causing biodiversity collapse — habitat loss is. Deer aren’t wrecking forests — policies that ignore the value of predators and ecosystem health are. Growing bear populations aren’t “the problem” — unsecured attractants and human sprawl are. Coyotes aren’t a threat — but unaccountable wildlife commissions kind of are. When we focus on “managing” animals, we avoid making the changes that actually matter: protecting habitat, limiting harmful industries, modernizing century-old policies, elevating communities and traditional knowledge, and respecting wildlife as living beings, not nuisances. Coexistence is not about controlling wildlife. It’s about changing human systems and belief structures so wildlife can live their lives. And that requires something traditional state wildlife governance has never prioritized: ethics+ science, democratic, and modern values. Wildlife deserve better.
