Hard to believe it’s been two decades since we lost Proof. I was lucky enough to meet him at the Up in Smoke afterparty — a night that’s stayed crystal clear in my mind ever since.

We got to talking like we’d known each other forever. I remember asking him where Eminem was, figuring he’d be right in the middle of the action. Proof just smiled and said, “He’s got a wife, so he’s back at the hotel room.” That always stuck with me — the loyalty, the respect. Even at the peak of everything, they kept their feet on the ground.

Then I opened up about my own dream. Told him I was trying to start my career as a rapper. Most people would’ve given me a polite nod and moved on. Not Proof. He locked in, looked me dead in the eyes, and said:

“Keep going. And if you make it big one day, I’m gonna remember.”

I didn’t make it big — not yet anyway. But I never stopped. And I’ve never forgotten those words, or the way he said them like he really meant them. That’s just who Proof was. A legend on the mic, but even more than that — a real one off it.
