National Ozone Unit SVG
The National Ozone Unit (NOU) of St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG)
Protection of our planet is paramount. Beyond our island shores, we are part of a wider global concern - the ozone layer acts as Earth's shield, blocking harmful UV radiation from the sun.
Unfortunately, human activities release ozone-depleting substances like chlorofluorocarbons and hydrochlorofluorocarbons into the atmosphere. These substances thin and deplete the ozone layer, creating serious consequences for human health, plant and aquatic organisms, and materials.
Our Government is Commitment to Action:
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, through its National Ozone Unit, plays a crucial role in safeguarding the ozone layer through decisive action.
We have ratified key international agreements:
🌍 Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer
🌍 Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer and its amendments
The NOU manages national programs to comply with the Montreal Protocol:
📋 Processing licenses for refrigerant importation
📋 Developing and implementing national policies within the refrigeration sector
📋 Ensuring technicians are professionally trained and certified in good refrigeration and air conditioning practices
📋 Promoting low global warming potential, energy-efficient alternative technologies
Our comprehensive approach demonstrates how small island developing states can contribute to global environmental action while protecting local communities and supporting professional development.
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines continues its nearly three-decade commitment to exceeding international environmental standards, proving that decisive action based on scientific evidence creates lasting benefits for current and future generations.

Continuing our World Ozone Day awareness campaign: Importers, technicians, and merchants of refrigeration and air conditioning equipment play a critical role in protecting the ozone layer.
Planning to import refrigerant gases? Here's what you need to know:
📅 Annual Registration Period - December 1-31: Apply to become a registered importer at https://nou-license-platform.vercel.app/
✅ Simple Process - Complete online application and await registration approval notification
📋 Order Requirements - When placing orders, specify the type and quantity of refrigerants you wish to import
📄 Import Documentation - Upon shipment arrival, upload purchasing invoice to schedule inspection and verification
🔍 Verification Process - Following successful inspection and verification, your import license will be granted
⚠️ PROHIBITED SUBSTANCES:
Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs)
Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs)
Equipment requiring these substances
Your compliance ensures Saint Vincent and the Grenadines continues exceeding Montreal Protocol commitments while supporting legitimate business operations.
The licensing system protects both the ozone layer and provides a clear regulatory framework for professional importers. This process maintains our nation's track record of environmental stewardship while supporting the refrigeration and air conditioning sector.

Following yesterday's World Ozone Day commemoration, we continue raising awareness about ozone protection.
Today's focus: Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Professionals - your role is critical in protecting the ozone layer.
Before achieving compliance, essential steps must be taken:
🎓 Proper Training is Key - Master the handling of controlled substances and controlled substances alternatives in environmentally friendly ways through good refrigeration practices
📋 Know the Standards - Understand national standards and regulations governing controlled substances and their alternatives under Saint Vincent and the Grenadines' regulatory framework
🏢 Secure Storage Requirements - Ensure well-ventilated, secure storage facilities for refrigerants and equipment as mandated by regulations
✅ Licensing Process - Once these requirements are met, apply for your license at www.gov.vc
Your compliance with Montreal Protocol regulations demonstrates professional excellence and environmental responsibility. This is the pathway to becoming a registered technician or company in the refrigeration and air conditioning sector.
Take the first step toward paving the way for a safer, cooler environment. Your professional practices today protect the ozone layer for future generations.

🌍 Celebrating World Ozone Day 2025 under the Theme: From Science to Global Action - 40 Years of the Vienna Convention
Today we commemorate the global effort to protect our ozone layer - the invisible shield in our atmosphere that protects us from the sun’s harmful UV rays. Watch our educational video to learn what the ozone layer is, where it's located, and why protecting it protects all life on Earth.
The ozone layer shields us and our environment, in return, we must protect it through our daily choices and actions.
Join the global effort to protect the ozone layer: 🔧 For cooling solutions, choose air conditioning systems that use alternative technologies with natural refrigerants - they have no or low global warming potential and are energy efficient 👨🔧 Always use trained technicians who follow good refrigeration practices during equipment servicing 🌱 Make environmentally conscious choices that support ozone protection.
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines has been protecting the ozone layer since 1996, consistently exceeding international targets and building local expertise. Together, we continue this important work for current and future generations.
