Contact lenses sit directly on your cornea — and the cornea needs oxygen. Which means contact lenses carry risks that glasses simply don’t.

The non-negotiable rules:

🚫 Never sleep in contact lenses unless specifically prescribed for overnight wear.
🚫 Never swim or shower in lenses — risk of Acanthamoeba keratitis, a sight-threatening infection.
🚫 Never top up your lens solution — always empty and completely refill.
🚫 Never wear lenses beyond their replacement schedule.

✅ Remove immediately if eyes become red, painful or sensitive to light.
✅ Always wash hands before handling lenses.

Contact lenses worn correctly are safe. Worn incorrectly, they carry real risks.

📊 Sphere (SPH): Main lens power. Minus (−) = short-sighted. Plus (+) = long-sighted.

📊 Cylinder (CYL) and Axis: Corrects astigmatism.

📊 Add: Extra power for near vision in bifocal or progressive lenses.

📊 Prism: Corrects eye alignment. Not in most prescriptions.

You’ve probably seen it — a reddish or pinkish growth on the white of someone’s eye, creeping toward the centre.
