Update on Scruffy
We took Scruffy in for a recheck appointment today so our veterinarian could evaluate his progress. The good news is that the wounds on his foot and neck have healed very well, and his sutures were removed today. Although he healed nicely, but he has lost about one pound since his initial intake.
Unfortunately, we also received some disappointing news regarding his jaw injury.
Our veterinarian had been developing a treatment plan to repair Scruffy's fractured jaw using wires and fixation devices to stabilize the bones and allow them to heal properly. We were hopeful that this procedure would give Scruffy the best chance at recovery.
However, after consulting with an orthopedic surgeon and reviewing his X-rays, it was determined that the surgery is unlikely to be successful. Scruffy has severe dental disease with infection around several tooth roots, and the fracture appears to be much older than originally thought and has already healed in its current position. Because of this, his case is far more complex than anticipated and would require a board-certified orthopedic specialist.
We are incredibly grateful for our veterinarian's honesty in recognizing that this is beyond the scope of her practice rather than putting Scruffy through a surgery that may not help him and could cause additional suffering.
With heavy hearts, we have to acknowledge that specialty surgery is unfortunately beyond what our small rescue can afford at this time.
This does NOT mean we are giving up on Scruffy.
We remain committed to providing him with the best care possible. We will continue his antibiotics, monitor his comfort and quality of life, and explore every available option. We have also reached out to a few larger nonprofit organizations in hopes of finding additional assistance for his case.

This is Scruffy. We were told that he got attacked by a coyote about a week ago. After examination, our vet says that he has a broken jaw due to the deep puncture on the side of his neck and into his cheek. His foot is hanging loose, so thatās also broken. However, we will need x-rays to see what kind/how bad of fracture he has. We are hoping that his bone isnāt shattered inside.
Scruffy is quite aggressive toward human touch, we are unsure if heās actually feral or this is an act out of excruciating pain that he is experiencing. He was still eating soft and liquidy food, alert, but is very very weak.
This is our initial cost to get a deeper look into his condition. We are again asking for your kindness and help toward Scruffy. Anything helps and so do your prayers.
