When I wrote Quest for the Phoenix for my niece Tori 2 years ago, I wanted to give her a story to show how amazing she was, just as she was, kind, funny, and loving. She said she loved it, but told me my next novel should be a dystopia, because she REALLY loved dystopias. I laughed and said, “But Tori! We live in a dystopia! It wouldn’t be fiction!”
But that conversation planted a seed that grew into a book, The North Passage. Over the next year, I saw many young people struggling with anxiety. Trying to make sense of this world we live in, the same as the adults, but without a larger frame of reference. ‘Don’t worry, it’s going to be okay,’ we say to them, while we are also filled with anxiety about the future.
I wanted to write a story that explained the larger unfolding in the world, the endless cycle of beginnings and endings. And though there is much beyond our control, we can still choose how to play our part in that story. The North Passage opens with another record-breaking hot summer, fears of war, and catastrophic natural disasters. Does that sound a little too real for fantasy? I tell you, as I wrote this book, I found life mirroring the words I wrote, and I knew this story was bigger than just a children’s book.
But it isn’t all doom and gloom. How can it be when you’ve got gnome friends like Malcolm and Seamus, always up for an adventure, with tea times planned and sorted of course. Tori and Hudson travel with them on a wild ride up the North Passage to the North Pole (because why not?) to find the mysterious Weavers. These ancient mystics wrote a prophecy that foretold this time we are in, the end of an Era. But what comes after the end? How do we create a new beginning? The children learn each of them plays a part in the Tapestry of Life. We choose what color, shape, and texture of thread we want to be, and our choices create a new world for all of us. What do you want the weave of the world to look like?

Designing Destiny - As some of you know, I spent 22 years practicing as an Architect before I stepped away to use my gifts in a way more aligned with my heart. What is Architecture at its core? It’s deep listening. Understanding how a group of people live and work, understanding the codes, rules, and environment around them, and then taking all those ideas, dreams, concepts, and ways of life and designing something that reflects all those parameters in the physical. As an Architect, I used the tools of pen, paper, and drawings to create plans that could be turned into concrete, steel, and wood.

In my spiritual practices as a shamanic healer, yoga teacher, and writer, I use those same skills of listening and understanding, but what is created is something different. It is not a physical building, but a spiritual one. It is helping people get in touch with their true heart and soul and creating a path in alignment with that heart. It is helping people find their way ‘home’ and creating that reality from who they already are, deep inside. I don’t want to design buildings. I want to design destinies.

To Design a Destiny isn’t about throwing away your old life, or trying to match the life of someone you saw on Instagram. It is about coming to a deep understanding of who you are and creating something in alignment with that self. To understand your soul and your heart, to understand where fear or insecurity has been holding you back, and where your path of bliss is calling you to go, It is stepping into your destiny. It is using the chaos of the storms around us to find out what has been weighing us down or holding us back so that we can release that energy and fly free. This path is not for the faint of heart, because it also means we have to change. We have to let go of our old patterns and insecurities. We have to have faith and trust in our own intuition and connection with Spirit, and we have to get real with our conditioning and habits. But to build a home based on love and light, whether it’s a physical house or how you relate to the world, is always a worthy endeavor.
