Today is National Zipper Day.
In most circles that means nothing.
But in ours —
it means everything.
Because our children have zippers too.
Not the kind on a jacket.
Not the kind on a backpack.
The kind that runs down the center of their chest.
The scar that tells the whole story without saying a single word.
The line that says —
they opened me up.
They held my heart in their hands.
And I survived.
CHD warriors call it their zipper scar.
And the way our children wear it —
God.
The way they wear it.
Not hidden.
Not ashamed.
Not covered up.
Worn.
Like the badge of honor it is.
Because that scar is not a flaw.
That scar is the proof.
Proof that a surgeon fought for them.
Proof that their body fought for them.
Proof that they were strong enough to come out the other side of the most terrifying thing a family can face.
Some of our kids are asked about it.
By strangers.
By classmates.
By kids on the playground who don't know what they're looking at.
And do you know what some of them say?
That's where they fixed my heart.
Just like that.
Simple.
Proud.
Unbothered.
Because they know what it cost.
And they wear it anyway.
On National Zipper Day —
we are not celebrating hardware.
We are celebrating every single warrior who carries a zipper scar on their chest.
Every scar that represents a surgery nobody wanted to need.
Every scar that represents a family who held their breath and prayed and waited and exhaled when their child came back to them.
Every scar that represents a life.
A whole beautiful fierce unstoppable life. 💙
