👋 Hello, folklore friends!
❓Do you know Syrtaki?
🫵 Most of you certainly do! It is probably the Greek dance most often requested at CIOFF festivals around the world.
🤷🏻♂️ But here’s an interesting fact:
🎬 Syrtaki is not a traditional Greek folk dance.
🤓It was created for the 1964 film Zorba the Greek, inspired by the movements and spirit of traditional Greek dances—especially the Hasapiko—and perfectly matched to the unforgettable music of Mikis Theodorakis.
🪕 Although Syrtaki is a modern choreography, it has become a worldwide symbol of Greece, introducing millions of people to Greek culture and often inspiring them to discover the rich diversity of our authentic traditional dances.
🎥 In this video, members of the Sinies Cultural Association, Corfu and the dance-teacher Ιωάννης Βλάχος will guide you through the basic Syrtaki steps and choreography—so you can learn it and dance along!
