Ear tip removal is a procedure performed only on feral cats—cats who have had little to no positive human interaction during their early socialization period. These independent felines are typically born outdoors, rely on their instincts to survive, and are often brought to SNAP by compassionate community members or through Trap‑Neuter‑Return (TNR) programs seeking to provide lifesaving care.

Because feral cats are fearful of humans, being trapped and handled can be extremely stressful. Ear tipping—the small, painless removal of the tip of the left ear during surgery—ensures they never have to endure that trauma twice. It’s the universal sign that a cat has already been spayed/neutered, allowing caretakers and trappers to identify them from a distance and avoid unnecessary surgeries.

Ear tipping is a cornerstone of TNR because it:
šŸ”Prevents repeat trapping and surgery for already‑sterilized cats
ā™„ļøReduces stress and suffering for feral cats who fear human contact
🐈Helps stabilize outdoor cat colonies
šŸ›‘Stops the cycle of unplanned litters

Summer is the most dangerous time for unplanned litters. As temperatures rise, so does the number of kittens born outdoors—many to feral cats who cannot be safely handled without trapping.

SNAP’s Beat the Heat campaign is our urgent mid‑year effort to stop the summer surge of unplanned litters by keeping spay/neuter services accessible for the families and community cats who need us most.
