BUTCHER FINISHES DRAMA FILLED RACE IN 6TH PLACE
A smile beamed across a very happy face on Ben Butcher after a strong showing, his best open class result for the season so far at Perth Motorplex on Saturday night.
Continuing from the momentum from his 5th place at the recent WA 360 Sprintcar Championship in Collie last month, Butcher was on fire from the outset, pushing his W42 to the limit to achieve his desired result for the night.
The signs were ominous at the start of the night, as hot laps began, Butcher had polled some of the fastest lap times out of the entire field. Come the time trial, he fired the car up and placed it in the top four in his group as well as polling the overall time of 9th from the 22 car field, his best result of the season for qualifying.
With only one heat race in the format once again, he pushed his way into 3rd place from a 4th place start, which would see him start from 6th place in the gruelling 57 lap A Main, once again his highest starting position for the season.
There was drama at the start of the race and when a car in front of him pulled to the infield, this saw him move up a row, even before a lap had been run. Now from position 4 on the grid, with a super fast race track, Butcher turned it on pushing hard into each corner and easily holding his own, against the toughest in the business.
After couple of dices with other drivers he was still looking in good shape come the compulsory pit stop after 27 laps were chalked down, sitting in 5th place.
Once the cars were pushed off again, Butcher had found his way into 4th place and was still surging forward. Twice on the back straight he diced for third place but just couldn’t get it done.
A heavy crash involving two cars on the back straight on lap 40, presenting Butcher with an issue with his LR tyre before the restart, the bleeder had failed its line to the rim causing the tyre go flat, a quick pit stop in the work area to change the tyre and he was back in the hunt.
Sure enough, on the restart, he pushed out of position 14, to start rounding up the competition. In just five laps he had easily made his way back inside the top ten. Pressing into 9th, passing Dayne Kingshott, solidified his top ten but he wasn’t finished and continued to press his case for his 2nd top five finish in as many races.
Another stoppages and another 2 positions achieved, sitting him in 7th before a last chance pass moved him into 6th place where he finished and was satisfied with how the race had gone.
“I am really happy with the result,” said Butcher rubbing his head after the huge distance. “I was really miffed when I had to come into the work area on lap 40. We were doing so well and the car felt awesome.”
Asked what had made the difference in the last couple of events as to how he has turned his luck around, he was up front about it;
“We’ve really gone back to basics with a lot of it,” he said. “I’m happy to land inside the top ten for this race, especially after the length of it.”
The team will now set themselves up for March 13th and the 24th annual Krikke Boys Shootout, which was cancelled due to the recent covid lockdown.
Butcher will press hard and try his best at having a shot at the three event Triple Crown series. If Saturday night is anything to go by, the Two B Racing team are in with a real chance for sure.
