A fire broke out at the Nottoway Plantation in Louisiana's Iberville Parish on May 15th burning it to the ground .

Staff members saw smoke on the second floor of the museum and later returned to the whole room engulfed in flames.

Built in 1859 by John Hampden Randolph, it was sustained by the forced labor of enslaved African Americans. In 1860, Randolph enslaved 155 people to operate his massive sugarcane plantation.

This former slave plantation is one of the largest antebellum mansions in the South.
