President signs bill to preserve and develop agricultural land 31/01/2025

A critical eye will always find its sustenance. The agricultural sector is so diverse today. It's not just about food production anymore, but all sorts of renewable needs for modern society. Of course the production systems need to persistently pursue a balance aimed at being sustainable at all levels. The physical location will always have to make sacrifices. Biodiversity will always have to give way. One would hope that the local economy will benefit. Enrichment can be a nasty concept. Because who benefits at the expense of who or what? What gets put first and foremost in the strategic plan.

It is good that we are being forced to think hard about our priorities.

Unconstitutional expropriation law obliterates SA’s growth prospects – IRR 24/01/2025

The Institute of Race Relations (IRR) criticizes the Expropriation Bill, signed into law by President Ramaphosa, for its potential to harm property rights and economic growth. The IRR argues the Act, which allows for expropriation without compensation, is unconstitutional and could lead to uncertainty and unfair treatment of property owners. The IRR plans to challenge the Act in court and invites support from the business community.

Well, it's the new year, 2025. The 141st year of this amazing association that represents the spirit of unity, community and good fellowship between our fellow citizens.

We can't control what will come at us. It will definitely not be easy. But we are there for each other through thick and thin as we always have been. There are some issues that we carry over, and continue to wrestle with.

We must mention some special Birthdays... today, one of our amazing forefathers, William Hyslop turns 92. Praise the Lord for all that he and the whole Hyslop family have been and contributed to this amazing area over the generations.

On New-Years day, Nigel Porter celebrated his 80th. Nigel is another pillar of the area. Not only a founding Partner of what is now Harvard House Group, but a man who has always given so much to the wellbeing of this town and surrounds. Again, to the whole family, we give thanks for your continued spirit of giving of yourselves above and beyond the normal call of duty.

Nice to start the year on such a celebratory note

Let's keep it all together folks as we navigate our way through the challenges of the year ahead and beyond.

It is pleasing to note that under the new government of national unity, we are starting to see some movement in the right direction. On Monday 11th November, minister of public enterprise held an interactive meeting at Howick West Community hall as part of a "Listening tour" aimed at listening to the public who are affected directly by the ineffectiveness of his department in the past regarding EPWP and CWP projects.

The majority of attendees were employees under the above projects, and complained primarily about corruption and nepotism, poor pay, and lack of protective clothing, PPE and tools.

Being expected to work often in appalling conditions with disgusting refuse and waste, in their own clothing, without gloves or breathing protection.

The HDLA was present, and also raised the concern of the poor and drawn out inefficiency pertaining to the outcomes of public works projects. Also mentioned was the dire need for intervention in the shocking state of rural infrastructure, in particular, public roads.
