At TorqueTech Innovations Pty Ltd, we recently completed the design and development of a 2-stage planetary gearbox engineered for demanding mine hoisting operations.

π§ Case Study | High-Speed Wind Turbine Gearbox Design
A client from Angola engaged TorqueTech Innovations to engineer and validate three gearbox concepts for a wind turbine application, with the objective of selecting the best-performing solution.
The challenge:
π A gearbox with a 17:1 ratio
β‘ High-speed operation up to 1000 rpm (to match generator speed)
π Rated for 4 kW power transmission
π Designed for use in a small-scale wind turbine system
We have completed the first concept of a Planetary Gearbox applying first-principles calculations and validating the design in line with ISO 6336, DIN 3990, ISO 281, and DIN 743.
π Key Results (Planetary Gearbox Concept):
Gear Root Safety Factor: 5.23
Gear Flank Safety Factor: 2.10
Safety Against Scuffing (Integral Temp): 4.02
Safety Against Scuffing (Flash Temp): 10.73
Bearing Static Safety Factor: 223.8
Bearing Nominal Service Life: 100,000,000 h
Bearing Reference Rating Life: 6,399,833 h

These results confirm that the planetary gearbox is mechanically sound, with robust gear safety margins and extended bearing life.
Turbine Sizing Insight:
For a 4 kW wind turbine at 1000 rpm generator speed and assuming a rated wind speed of roughly 10 m/s, the corresponding rotor diameter would be in the range of 4.5 β 5.0 meters. This aligns the gearbox with a small-to-medium scale wind turbine application, ideal for decentralized power generation.
Next steps:
We are now proceeding with the design and validation of the second concept (Parallel Axis Gearbox) and the third concept (Power Split Gearbox). The results will be compared to determine the optimal solution for our client.
