The Silent Crisis: Why Are Men’s Lives Shorter in Africa?

Across Africa, women are outliving men by years. But why? Why is male life expectancy consistently lower? What are we missing?

Could it be the silence around men’s health, where check-ups are avoided until it is too late? Could it be the dangerous jobs men take on with little protection? Could it be the heavy weight of stress carried in silence, while society teaches men to “be strong”? Or is it the preventable risks, violence, accidents, and unhealthy coping, that cut life short?

And what does this mean for our families, our children, and our economies when men do not live long enough to contribute fully? How many communities are weakened because their men do not reach old age?

These are hard questions, but they matter. Because extending the lives of our men is not only about personal health, it is about social stability, economic growth, and the future of Africa.

So, what can we do differently, for our fathers, brothers, and sons?
