By Buffalo Reporter
Lusaka
Scores of defence and security personnel gathered at the Army Chapel at Arakan Barracks today to mark the 77th International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, joining countries worldwide in honouring the men and women who serve under the UN flag.
The solemn commemoration was characterised by prayers, music, and a sermon, reflecting on the sacrifices and dedication of peacekeepers across the globe.
Speaking during the service, Ministry of Defence Permanent Secretary, Mr Maambo Haamaundu commended the Zambia Army for its selfless service in international peacekeeping operations.
Mr Haamaundu noted that Zambian troops’ discipline and commitment to protecting human rights have continued to raise the nation’s profile beyond its borders.
This year’s observance is held under the theme “Invest in Peace”.
Mr Haamaundu described the theme as progressive, urging collective action towards building a just world.
“Peace is not just achieved by chance but by commitment, sacrifice, and unity,” he said, adding that sustainable peace is the foundation for advancing social sectors such as education and health.
Mr Haamaundu further assured that Zambia will remain peaceful before, during, and after the 13 August 2026 general elections, calling on the Defence Force to uphold professionalism throughout the electoral period and beyond.
And United Nations Acting Resident Coordinator in Zambia, Dr Peter Clement Lisuba also addressed the gathering, praising Zambian troops for their professionalism in UN missions.
He emphasised that peace is a cost-effective way to restore hope in times of war, but requires financial support and decisive action.
“We are all peacekeepers, past and present, and we affirm our responsibility to respect and strengthen their work as we pay tribute to the over 4,500 who lost their lives in peacekeeping operations since 1948,” Dr Lisuba said.
Meanwhile, Zambian troops serving under the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in the Central African Republic also observed the day with a series of activities, underscoring the country’s continued contribution to global peace efforts.

By Buffalo Reporter
Lilongwe, Malawi
The 34th session of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Ordinary Meeting of the Sub-Committee of the Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation has opened in Lilongwe today, Friday 29 May, 2026.
The two-day meeting will review emerging security threats in Southern Africa and develop practical measures to strengthen regional stability.
Malawi Defence Force Commander and Chairperson of the meeting, General George Alexander Jaffu (Jr), says the attendance of Chiefs of Defence Forces from member states has shown strong commitment to regional peace, stability and security.
“The presence of Chiefs of Defence Forces demonstrates a collective commitment to maintaining peace, stability and security across the region,” Gen Jaffu said.
He said the meeting, held few days after Africa Freedom Day, must produce resolutions that advance unity, freedom and security for SADC citizens.
“This meeting is taking place just days after Africa Freedom Day celebrations. Our resolutions must contribute meaningfully towards promoting unity, freedom, peace and security for the people of our region,” he said.
Gen Jaffu said the sub-committee plays a key role in turning SADC political commitments into practical military capabilities, citing transnational crime, maritime insecurity and other emerging threats as challenges requiring a coordinated response.
“The security of one member state is inseparable from the security of us all. I urge member states to remain resilient and responsive in the face of evolving security threats,” he said.
He also paid tribute to the SADC Standby Brigade for its continued work of protecting civilians and supporting civil authorities.
Commander Zambia Army, Lieutenant General Geoffrey Choongo Zyeele who is accompanied by heads of Branches from Zambia Army Headquarters is among the delegates attending the meeting, representing the Zambia Defence Force.
