GRASSROOTS STRUCTURES IN KAFUE BACK NJEKWA, CHONYA AND VENA ZULU AMID ADOPTION CONTROVERSY

May 12, 2026
By Staff Reporter

Growing divisions have emerged in Kafue District following allegations of vote buying and manipulation in the ongoing UPND adoption process, with grassroots structures reportedly backing Mulemwa Collins Njekwa for Kafue West Constituency, Mirriam Chonya for Kafue East Constituency, and Vena Zulu for the mayoral position.

Supporters on the ground have argued that the three candidates enjoy genuine popularity among party members and local communities despite attempts by some individuals to influence the adoption process through alleged bribery.

Mr. Njekwa, an aspiring parliamentary candidate for Kafue West, dismissed circulating figures claiming certain candidates were leading in popularity rankings, describing the reports as fake and misleading.

He maintained that no official process had been conducted to produce such results and urged party members to remain calm as they await guidance from the National Management Committee election team.

Sources within the district further alleged that several wards did not fully participate in the process, claiming that some party structures were compromised through financial inducements.

Concerns have also been raised in areas such as Magoba and Chikupi, where some members believe the views of ordinary party supporters were ignored.

Meanwhile, headmen in parts of Kafue are said to have endorsed Mr. Njekwa, Ms. Chonya, and Vena Zulu, citing their strong connection with communities and commitment to supporting President Hakainde Hichilema ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Traditional leaders have reportedly called for unity and fairness in the adoption process to ensure that candidates chosen truly reflect the wishes of the people.
