Zambia Army Takes Responsibility for Assault on Mufulira Residents, Promises Disciplinary Action
THE Zambia Army has accepted responsibility after its recruits assaulted Mufulira residents and has promised to discipline the erring individuals.
Army spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Sydney Mwewa said the Army is deeply concerned about the incident that occurred yesterday in Mufulira, involving a section of recruits from the Taung Up Barracks.
He said reports indicate that three recruits were attacked by a group of taxi drivers in the Central Business District of Mufulira, resulting in one recruit sustaining multiple injuries and being admitted to Ronald Ross Hospital.
Lieutenant Colonel Mwewa explained that after seeing their injured colleague, the other two recruits called for reinforcements from their fellow recruits, who subsequently engaged in acts of violence against civilians, causing injuries and damage to property.
"We unequivocally condemn this behavior by our recruits. The Zambia Army is mandated to serve and protect the people of Zambia. Any actions that violate this mandate are unacceptable and will not be tolerated," he said.
He added that a thorough investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and to identify those responsible.
Lieutenant Colonel Mwewa assured that the perpetrators will face appropriate disciplinary measures, in line with the provisions of the Defence Act, Chapter 106 of the Laws of Zambia.
He, however cautioned the public against provoking or harassing Army personnel.
"We extend our sincere apologies to the affected individuals and communities. In light of this unfortunate incident, the Zambia Army urges the public to co-exist peacefully with soldiers and refrain from provoking or harassing Army personnel, especially recruits who are still learning the tenets of good soldiering," he said.
Lieutenant Colonel Mwewa warned that provocative behavior could lead to dangerous situations and undermine the trust between the Army and the public.
